Marriage License Information

The couple is responsible for obtaining their Louisiana marriage license prior to the ceremony, within the time frame specified by the State. Couples may apply at any marriage license office in the State of Louisiana; you do not have to apply in your Parish of residence or in the Parish where you are getting married. The 24-hour waiting period may be waived for out-of-state couples.
Please carefully read the requirements to ensure that you have the necessary documents before applying. Please contact the LA Vital Records office or a Parish Clerk of Court office for more information.
After the ceremony, I will return your license to the appropriate office. The license will be recorded, and then you will receive a certified copy of your marriage certificate in the mail within four to six weeks.

***Orleans Parish Marriage Licenses may also be purchased at the Second City Court of New Orleans in the Historic Algiers Courthouse at 225 Morgan Street in Algiers. Licenses are issued between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding state holidays).

The Marriage License and Passport Department’s West Bank office is located in the main Jefferson Parish General Government Center, 200 Derbigny St., Suite 2200, Gretna.
